Infant Water Confidence Program

Our 'Parent & Me' program focuses on water safety and familiarisation for children from 6 months to 2 1/2-3 years of age. There are several levels within our Infant Program catering for the inexperienced to those with lots of confidence but no skills. As your child progresses through the levels, teachers will work on skills designed to develop each child's water safety and awareness at their own pace.

Parents and children will learn relaxed submersions, breath control, floating, propulsion activities and the all important safety skill of returning to the side. Our program helps develop children's balance, coordination and self-confidence. Classes also offer parents a chance to socialise with others and to develop friendships.

Classes in the 'Parent & Me' program are available Monday to Saturday mornings. Various times are offered throughout the mornings and classes are for 30 minutes. There are a maximum of 5-6 ctudents per class. When parents and children are ready to progress, they move into the learn to swim strand.

Learn-To-Swim Program

Our 'Learn-To-Swim' program begins as early as 2 1/2 years in the 'Squirts' level. This level is for children who have completed 'Parent & Me' classes and are now ready to swim without Mum or Dad. 'Squirts' continues to teach safety skills while also developing confidence and introducing primary skills - eg. floating, kicking and safety.

From three years onwards, children participate in the learn to swim strand. Once primary skills are consolidated, formal strokes are introduced. Freestyle with bi-lateral breathing and backstroke are introduced first. The strokes are broken down into a number of more easily learned skills. As your child progresses confidently through the levels, further skills will be added. This process will continue until swimmers are competent, confident and ready for the stroke development level. As well as learning formal strokes, swimmers will continue safety skills and will experience swimming in the deep water. Learn to swim classes are available Monday to Saturday with both morning and afternoon classes. Classes are for 30 minutes and to ensure quality teaching time, there are 3-6 students in each class depending on their level.

Stroke Development

The main goals of the stroke development strand are:

to build on the previous learned skills of freestyle and backstroke

to extend the swimming distance

to introduce breaststroke and butterfly

to teach swimmers how to swim efficiently

to prepare swimmers for entry to swimming clubs

and, to have success in the school swimming program

Throughout the three levels, strokes will be broken down to more easily learned drills. As drills are mastered, and performed at an appropriate level, another drill/skill will be introduced. By continually adding and learning new skills throughout the three levels, swimmers will learn to swim all four strokes with efficient technique. Having successfully graduated from stroke development, swimmers would be ready to join a swimming club, and/or compete at school swimming carnivals.
